  • Sonny 8 weeks RESPONSIBLE BREEDING
Breeding a litter of Norfolks is a tremendous responsibility, time consuming, and very expensive. Choosing a good stud dog, planning the mating, shipping or travel to the dog, coordinating the breeding, bringing your (hopefully pregnant) bitch home, maintaining her health and exercise during pregnancy, whelping the litter, caring for bitch and litter for a minimum of 12 weeks, vets, shots, tails and dew claws...all this takes place before I can even hope for a show quality puppy I can keep for myself. I only bred when I am going to keep a show quality puppy for myself. If there are any companion quality dogs (they all are companion quality...just not all show quality), I will sell to qualified homes. Than there are the extras such as crate training and pictures so prospective new dog parents (you wanting dogs) can see their new baby.....well, Folks.....it is a lot of work. I, for one, only do this when I want a dog for myself. Responsible breeders spend time planning a breeding program that will produce sound, healthy, happy, and beautiful companion dogs as well as show prospects. All my bitches have heart evaluations (every other year) and eye tests.

Lee at 9 weeks THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER
Only 300 Norfolk Terriers are born in the United States annually. That makes Norfolk Terriers very rare. The demand for these dogs is tremendous.....way out distancing the supply. The reason they are so much in demand is because the breeding of these dogs has been left up to the people that will protect the breed. People that want to make sure that the dogs stay true to the breed standard and breed these dogs true to their personality portrait. They will never be like Labradors. Only 2 to 4 puppies are born in a litter. The mortality for puppies under 6 weeks of age can be very high. Stop and compare the 300 born to the over 160,000 Labrador Retrievers. Compare the 2 to 4 puppies to 8 to 12 for Labradors....Are you starting to get the picture? If you are thinking about buying your first dog vist the American Kennel Club's Website and read their article "Thinking About Buying a Dog". Norfolk Terriers love their people and are family members don't plan on leaving them alone in the yard or at home all day long while you are working. Norfolk Terriers do require grooming. They need to have their nails cut at least every other week and their coat brushed at least weekly. They do shed. Though they don't shed like a Labrador, you do find hairs on the couch and clinging to your clothes. They do require hand stripping .... pulling of the coat at least twice yearly to keep them neat and in a fresh, harsh coat. Most of the dogs shown on these pages are groomed for show, which requires more than just a once a week brushing. They are wonderful pets and companions for children but I strongly recommend that you wait until your child is at least 7 years old before getting them a dog. I don't sell dogs to children (ie. "I want to get a dog for my child for Christmas".) I sell dogs to families and people that have researched, planned and understand the responsibility and lifetime commitment that caring for a puppy (that will become a dog...and then become a old dog). I often get the statement "I am just looking for a companion dog, not a show dog." With me, all my dogs are companion dogs, some of them are just more beautiful than others. The price of companion puppy is $3,000.

Eva at 9 weeks WHAT I REQUIRE OF A PROSPECTIVE PUPPY BUYER
First, I look for homes that fit the dogs. You won't be looking over the litter and picking a puppy. I require an application, references, several telephone conversations with you, a deposit....once you are accepted as a new owner prospect, and full payment plus shipping and crate(Cashier's Check or Money Order)before I ship the dog. I DO KEEP A WAITING LIST and will put your application on file and contact you when litters are upcoming or available. Occasionally, I have an older dog, show puppy drop out, or a dog that needs rehoming. These are very carefully rehomed. All companion dogs are sold with a Limited AKC Registration, this means you can't show the dog in a AKC Conformation Event nor can you breed the dog and register the offspring. I also require a written, signed spay/neuter contract on ALL companion quality dogs. I consider show dogs...breeding quality dogs....and not everyone of those turns out. THINK THESE ARE TOUGH REQUIREMENTS....well, so did some of my current owners. Many have commented "I thought I was adopting a child." But once they have their dogs/puppies....they realize these dogs are like children. I hear "Are they all this wonderful?" My reply is "Yes, they are". They are special dogs for special people.

Sonny at 8 weeks WHAT I DO AND DON'T PROVIDE
I do provide a contract to protect you and your puppy. I do provide a health certificate signed by the vet that has attended the puppy since birth. I do provide references from people that have bought dogs from me. I do provide a written guarantee. I do ship by air counter to counter (you pay for the shipping). And I own the dog until it is safely delivered to your waiting arms. I don't provide....referrals to other Norfolk Terrier owners.....mainly because I don't know who has litters...but mostly because how can I refer you when I don't know you. The Norfolk Terrier Club (NTC-link below) and American Norfolk Terrier Association (ANTA - link below) provide wonderful web sites full of information. You can go to the the NTC web site for their breeder list. I don't keep a list of breeders in your area. Go to Dog Shows.....look under Infodog.com (link below)or AKC Events (link below), find a show in your area. Info dog has everything about the dog show, including directions and a judging schedule. The judging schedule will tell you if any Norfolks are entered and what ring they will be shown in and the time. Go to the show...met the owner/handler. Ask if you can talk to them AFTER THEY SHOW. Your best contact is a breeder in your area. I will be happy to answer questions about the breed and try to help you in any way I can. I get approximately 15 or more calls a week, so I can't return long distance calls. I do response to reasonable E-Mail requests. I wish you luck in your quest...Tina Dennis
